Title: Rediscovering the dynamics of classical systems by fractional diffusion

Abstract: Fractional differential equations are becoming increasingly used as a powerful modelling approach for understanding the many aspects of non-locality and spatial heterogeneity. In this talk, I will illustrate how the fractional counterparts of many classical reaction-diffusion systems can exhibit dramatically different dynamics to those of standard diffusion, and as such can greatly extend the modelling capabilities of basic models in physics. In particular, the biophysical interpretation of these systems in the context of excitable media will be discussed, with broad implications in cardiac electrophysiology. The proposed approach may also have important applications in the clinical identification of cardiac structural abnormalities. Alfonso Bueno-Orovio, PhD.
