The success of laser cooling and trapping of atoms has provided exciting opportunities for studying the physics of cold atoms. Of particular interest in our group are topics related to atom optics and the application of low energy atomic physics to study manybody phenomena in degenerate (bosonic/fermionic) atoms. Current research topics in the group include atomic Bose-Einstein condensation; the quantum mechanics of the initiation of the condensation process; the physics of vortex states and topological phases; and the control of atomic interactions with electric fields.
