6D20.20 Gratings with White Light

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the effects of a grating on white light

DESCRIPTION: Place a grating in front of a bright white light source. Display pattern (if possible) against lecture hall wall.

  1.  White light source (carbon arc lamps?), gratings, stands

SUGGESTIONS: Not all gratings will work well for this demonstration. Check out the "Gratings" box (on the optics shelves). We also have hand-held gratings available to pass out to students. (Of course, as many of these should be collected at the end of class as possible. We do not have enough gratings to give them away!)
