6D20.15 Gratings with Laser

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the effects of gratings on coherent light

DESCRIPTION: Place a grating in front of a laser beam. Display the resulting pattern on the lecture hall wall.

SETUP TIME: Minimal

SUGGESTIONS: This demonstration doesn't work well for all gratings. Check out our collection in the "Gratings" box (on optics shelves).

OTHER NOTES: Please practice laser safety and make sure the backscatter from the slit (not to mention the primary beam) is directed at the floor and not up or out at students.
