PURPOSE: To demonstrate the components of a transformer
DESCRIPTION: A variety of demonstrations with the Leybold "dissectible" transformer kit.
SETUP TIME: Medium
COMPONENT LIST:
- Leybold dissectible transformer kit EM Shelves
- Lamp Light Source Shelf
SUGGESTIONS: The kti consists of several coils (46, 250, 500, 1000, and 23,000 turns) carefully pre-formed to slip over laminated iron cores. Both straight and U-shaped corse are available. Typically one puts 250 turns on one leg of the U and 1000 on the other, then completes the magnetic circuit with the straight bar across the ends of the U. Then, for example, 10 volts applied to the 250 coil will produce (nearly) 40 volts on the 1000 coil. Or vice-versa. The necessity of completeing the magnetic circuit can be shown by yanking off the straight bar while the coils are lighting a light bulb; The bulb dims or even goes out. Many points about inductance and reactance can be made with this Leybold kit; a capacitor (typically 60 or 70 uF) can also be added, to show resonance.

OTHER NOTES: There is some danger connected with this demonstration because 115-volt (or higher) hosehold electricity is present on un-insulated conductors which are sometimes a few centimeters from the instructor's hands.
