5J10.20 Collapse of Mag. Field Burns out Household Bulb

PURPOSE: To demonstrate principles of self-inductance.

DESCRIPTION: A household light bulb (25 W or more) can be burned out by the energy in the magnitic field of a 1-tesla (200 henry) magnet. Calculation of 1/2 L I2 energy can be made.
