PURPOSE: To demonstrate forces on current in wires.
DESCRIPTION: A brass bar is hyung by heavy but flexible conductors so that it swings between the poles of a powerful permanent magnet, with plainly marked poles. Current is paplied to the brass bar, and it jumps in or out of the magnet's field according to the direction of the current with respect to the poles. The current is reversed and the bar jumps the other way. The students can be asked to predict the behavior of the bar, given the current-flow direction and the polarity of the magnet.
