5G50.50 Superconductivity

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the concepts of superconductivity.

DESCRIPTION: We have available a small superconductivity kit consisting of a small disk of YBCo material and a tiny samarium-cobalt magnet. When the YBCo disk is placed on a copper heat sink immersed in liquid nitrogen (take appropriate precautions), the magnet (a tiny cube) will float Meissner-fashion in the air abovce the disk.

SUGGESTIONS: This works, but it's not really very impressive and can only be seen by one person at a time, unless TV is used. The availability of this demonstration depends on whether there is any liquid nitrogen in the building.
