PURPOSE: To demonstrate the energy stored in a capacitor.
DESCRIPTION: A 40uF oil capacitor is charged to two or three thousand volts, then discharged through a small carbon resistor, which explodes.
SETUP TIME: Medium
COMPONENT LIST:
- 40uF oil capacitor Capacitor Area
- Carbon Resistor Resistor drawer
- Power Supply Power Supply Area
SUGGESTIONS: WARNING This is a very striking, but DANGEROUS and POTENTIALLY FATAL demonstration. It should ONLY be done by instructors who are experienced in high-voltage demonstrations. Safety glasses and earplugs should be worn by the instructor. Also, the first row should be cleared. Tell students to cover their ears.
