PURPOSE: To demonstrate the persistence of charge on a dielectric surface.
DESCRIPTION: Leyden-jar type capacitor consists of an inner and outer metal cup with a special plastic cup nesting inbetween. The capacitor is assembled, and charged in any convenient way (Van de Graaff). The capacitor is then carefully disassembled. When the inner cup is completely removed, the capacitor is "safe". All the parts of the capacitor -- inner metal cup, outer metal cup, and dielectric plastic cup -- may be passed around (separately!) and handled by the students. When the capacitor is re-assembled, a spark can be cast.
SETUP TIME: Minimal
COMPONENT LIST:
- Leyden-jar type capacitor Static Electricity Cabinet
- Van de Graaff "
SUGGESTIONS: DANGER: This Leyden jar stores a large charge. AVOID LETTING ANYONE (including yourself) GET SHOCKED.
