3B70.10 Coupled Tuning Forks

PURPOSE: To demonstrate coupled resonance

DESCRIPTION: Two identical tuning forks atop sounding boxes are placed on the demonstration table with the open ends of the boxes facing one another. Only one of the tuning forks is struck. The boxes are then moved apart and the fork that was struck is silenced (stop its vibration), yet the students will still hear the tone.

SUGGESTIONS: When moving the boxes apart, be careful not to stop all the vibrations in the forks (by touching them)!
