1Q40.10 "Ice Skater's Twirl" 1Q40.10 "Ice Skater's Twirl"

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the conservation of angular momentum

DESCRIPTION: The tabletop version is described in 1Q20.10. The full-size version is our almost-frictionless stool paired with the heavy (orange) ring-weights. Spin yourself (or a unlucky student) s..l..o..w..l..y on the stool with arms (and weights) fully extended. S..l..o..w..l..y pull the weights into your chest.

SETUP TIME: Ready to go

COMPONENT LIST:

  1. Tabletop Version: "Whirlybird" device
  2. Full-Size Version: friction-free stool, weights

SUGGESTIONS: Slowly is the key word here. It is very easy to get thrown off the stool. Be careful. This is fun for students to play on after class.
