PURPOSE: To graphically demonstrate the principles of the conservation of energy.
DESCRIPTION: A bowling ball pendula can be set up in the front of many of our lecture halls. When held to the nose and allowed to swing freely, students learn that the professor has "faith" that the laws of the conservation of energy holds true (else his or her nose would be "bashed").
SETUP TIME: Medium (quite difficult to hang the bowling ball)
COMPONENT LIST:
- Bowling Ball pendula CM Shelves
SUGGESTIONS: Of course, it is very important not to give the bowling ball a push as it starts out, lest ones nose actually be bashed. For the more queasy...er...sane on staff, this demonstration may also be done with a watermelon or television screen in place of the professor's head.
