1D50.20 "Whirligig"

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the effects of central forces

DESCRIPTION: Two balls (one with less mass than the other) are connected by a rope that passes through a metal sleeve. With the ball of greater mass below the sleeve (hanging down), swing the less massive ball in a circle. As the "light" ball moves, the "heavy" ball will be pulled up. (And, as one allows the "light" ball to stop moving in a circle, the heavy ball falls and the "light" ball moves more quickly around the circle of its motion.)
