Formula Sheet for the Final Exam.

Goals
The goals of this course are to teach you to understand basic classical mechanics at the conceptual level, and to make you adept in solving relevant problems. The approaches used to achieve these goals involve
  1. lectures to discuss and demonstrate the principles
  2. laboratory experiments allowing you to explore actively these principles
  3. electronic homework on the Web to engage you in problem solving
  4. interaction with instructors to help with concepts and problem solving.
Good Advice
Here is some good advice.
Pre/Co-requisites
MATH1502 is a "prerequisite with concurrence allowed" for this course.   This means that you must already have taken MATH1502 or be registered in it for the summer term.

Lectures
Attendance for all lectures is strongly encouraged.   Lectures will complement material in the text rather than repeat it.  The pace of the course starts out slowly but picks up.  A large amount of material will be covered in a short amount of time. Successful completion of this course will require a sustained effort on your part to keep up with the material and understand the topics as they are presented. You are strongly encouraged to read the indicated portion of the text prior to the lecture.

If you have a question ask it in class rather than E-Mailing me.  Others may have the same question.

Please turn off all cell phones during lecture.

Laboratory
Labs begin the first week of class. You are responsible for reading all the lab policy and administrative pages at www.physlab.gatech.edu, before your first lab. Check the "Lab Hours, Rooms, and TAs" page shortly before your first lab meeting, in case the room has been changed.
Attendance in lab is a course requirement. To pass this course, you must pass the laboratory portion with an average of 60% or more. Three unexcused absences from lab will result in automatic failure of the lab, and therefore, of the course.
Students who have passed PHYS 2211 and are repeating the course may request a permit to enroll in the exempt lab section L0 from your instructor in Howey Physics Room E-101. These permits MUST be requested and used before the close of business on Wednesday, May 17.
No student is automatically exempt from lab. Only those students enrolled in L0 as their sole lab section are exempt. Students enrolled in any other lab section must attend lab.
Homework
Electronic homework will be assigned and graded through the internet-based system called Masteringphysics.  Your class ID is PHYS2211S06 . You will be given instructions on how to submit electronic homework during the first week of class. All assignments will be due at 11:00 PM on the dates indicated on the course schedule.  After the due date and time you can still submit answers.  The credit awarded decreases linearly to zero over a period of 48 hours after the deadline.

You are permitted and encouraged to work together on the homework.  However simply cutting and pasting solutions is considered an honor code violation.

Masteringphysics provides hints to help you work thru problems.  This takes the form of addition questions such that the final solution is achieved by a number of smaller steps.  There is no penalty for using the hints but the hints must be answered correctly.  There is a 2% bonus for not using the hints.   Your lowest homework score will be dropped at the end of the term and the remaining scores scaled to 75 points (plus any bonus).

  PRS Questions

Everyday in class several questions will be asked for which your individual answers will be recorded using the PRS (Personal Response System).   Each correct answer receives two points, each incorrect answer receives one point.  At the end of the term scores will be totaled and scaled to a maximum of 50 points.   Using a PRS transmitter other than your own is an honor code violation.   Attendance may periodically be taken by sign in sheet.

   Tests and Final
Four regular quizzes and one final exam will be administered in this course. The regular quizzes will be held in class on the Fridays  indicated in the course schedule. The final is scheduled for 11:30 am on Tuesday, Aug 1, 2006.   This time is tentative and may change.  Makeup quizzes will only be provided for students excused by the Institute under section IV.B.3 of the Student Rules and Regulations, or whose presence elsewhere is required by a court of law, or when accommodation for an absence is requested by the Office of the Dean of Students. Note that the Office of the Dean of Students will not make such a request for routine matters such as short-term illness, doctor appointments, wedding attendance, job interviews, and the like.
You are responsible for reading and following the Rules and Procedures for Quizzes and Final before coming to the first regular quiz.
Academic Integrity
The policy on academic honesty as stated in the GIT Honor Code will be fully enforced during this course.
