  • The Mastering Physics course ID for Phys 2212 G is MPERBIL0007.
Text: Physics for Scientists and Engineers, Volumes 4, with Mastering Physics, by Randall D. Knight , Pearson Addison Wesley. Make sure that you purchase a textbook that has a passcode for the "Mastering Physics" homework system bundled in with it.

In certain subjects, the lectures will be more comprehensive and rigorous than the levels of presentation provided in the Textbook. In all of these cases, the materials presented in class shall provide the basis for the homeworks and the exams. Attendance for all lectures shall be crucial in a successful completion of this course.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
  Phys 2211 or equivalent
CLASSES:
  Lectures + 5 Quizzes + Homeworks + Lab + Final Exam
GRADING:

5 Quizzes (after Lowest Quiz Grade) 375 points
Drop Lowest Quiz Grade -75 points
Laboratory + Recitation 80 points
Homeworks 80 points
Final Exam 140 points
Total Maximum possible points 600 points

A 540 - 600
B 480 - 539
C 420 - 479

QUIZZES:
Each of the course quizzes will consist of five to ten problems or questions. Specific instructions for taking quizzes will be provided by your instructor during the class that precedes the first quiz. Suspected errors in your quiz grade must be reported to your instructor before the day of the next quiz in writing. BRING YOUR STUDENT ID CARD TO ALL QUIZZES.

Scientific calculators with no more than one line of display and no alpha display may be used. In short -- if your calculator can store and display a formula, you cannot use it.
CLASS PARTICIPATION:
The final examination will cover comprehensive questions for the semester's work.
ATTENDANCE:
Sign up sheets will be passed around during the lectures to check the attendance. It is the responsibility of students to follow ANY ANNOUNCEMENT MADE IN CLASS DURING THE SEMESTER.
HOMEWORK PROBLEMS:
The emphasis in this class will be on developing your observational, conceptualization and problem solving skills. Homework must be turned in at or before the hour indicated. NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. The assignments will be administered and graded electronically, through an internet-based system called Mastering Physics. This homework system is specifically designed to work hand-in-hand with the textbook. When you purchase your text, you will, at the same time, be purchasing a two-year registration for Mastering Physics. After purchasing the text, you will need to register with MP in order to activate your homework account.
LABORATORY AND RECITATION:
The Labs and the Recitation start the week of August 28th this semester. Lab is a course requirement and all students (except the ones with explicit permission) must attend. You should go to the physics lab web page, http://www.physlab.gatech.edu/physlab/labpolicies.html, and read all of the policies and administrative pages for your lab before the first meeting.

The Recitation attendance policy shall be the same as the Lab attendance policy explained at the link above.

Please note that: (1) exemptions are only allowed for students retaking the class after making a prior 'D"; and (2) exemptions should be requested by the end of business on Wednesday, August 23. The procedure is explained at:
http://www.physics.gatech.edu/academics/info/index.html

CANCELED CLASSES:
:If, at the time of the scheduled quiz, classes are officially suspended, that quiz will NOT be given and any special arrangements will be announced the next scheduled class.
HELP LABS:
The Physics Help Lab will be operational in Room N209. The sessions run Monday through Thursday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

You are advised to assign at least 2 hours per lecture-hour for studying in this course.

ACADEMIC HONESTY:
The policy on academic honesty as stated in the GIT Honor Code will be fully enforced during this course.

Professor Ahmet Erbil, obtained his B.S. in Physics from Ankara University in Turkey and his Ph.D. in Physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After two years at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Prof. Erbil joined Georgia Tech Faculty to establish a program on electronic and photonic materials. He has been a Sloan Research Fellow and a recipient of IBM Faculty Development Award. He was a Visiting Professor at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland in the Fall of 1991. He has been consultant to several large industrial firms. He has also been principal investigator on many projects sponsored by government agencies and corporations. Prof. Erbil's research interest is in the fabrication and study of novel thin film materials, including ferroelectrics, silicon, II-IV and II-VI semiconductor compounds, transition metal oxides, high-temperature superconductors and diamond. He holds five patents in the field of MOCVD chemicals and thin film production.
