Course Description

This course aims to provide you with broad exposure to "hot" topics in physics. Each weekly seminar in this course will typically feature a GT faculty member, who will describe cutting edge research in a particular subfield of physics. In addition seminars will be offered on topics that will help assist you with "life after GT"; these topics include GT career services, GT alumni services and graduate school application procedures. You will be expected to provide written summaries of each week's seminar; this component of the course will help develop your technical communication skills.

Good Advice
One good way to improve your writing is to read and to use Strunk and White.

Course Schedule
Grades

You will be expected to provide a 1-2 page written summary of each seminar. Handwritten summaries will not be accepted. The written summary will be due in one week at the beginning of the next seminar. The summary will be scored on a 10 point scale and will be evaluated for coherence, completeness, grammar and spelling. Attendance in the course is mandatory. The final course grade will be reduced by one letter grade for each unexcused absence from a seminar. Excused absences will be allowed only for situations approved by the Dean of Students or for participation in activities approved by the Student Academic and Financial Affairs Committee of the Faculty Senate (must be requested in advance).

Academic Honesty

The policy on academic honesty as stated in the GIT Honor Code will be fully enforced during this course.
